Experience with Wine So Far

I would describe myself as a wine expert. That's a complete lie, I can usually tell the difference between red and white wine, but sometimes the color is in the middle and then I get confused. Most of my experience with wine has been in a religious context, and that's limited almost exclusively to one kind of wine (Manischewitz Concord Grape) that is barely even wine by definition. It's also pretty disgusting.

I tried to learn a little bit about wine when I first turned 21, but that was short lived when I decided I didn't like most of the wines that I bought and cooked with all of them instead. From my minimal experience with wine I know that I don't like dry wine, and I don't like overly sweet wine (see Manischewitz). I tend to like more white wines than red wines.

This sounds dumb, but I hope to learn about wine in this class. I know almost nothing about it. I want to learn enough to look at a bottle and know if I will like it, and what food I should eat while I drink it. I also have always been curious why people pay so much for some wines that seem to taste the same as cheap wines. Maybe I'll learn enough to pick up on the subtle flavor that I seem to be missing now.
